The Big Spenders is a richly anecdotal, often gossipy and humorous survey of the lavish consumption, spectacle and extravagance of America's ultra-wealthy during the Gilded Age and early 20th century. The author focuses less on how the fortunes were made, and more on how they were spent: mansions, yachts, parties, dining, art, jewelry, exotic travel and the display of wealth as social theater.
